2023 Tonari Gumi Charity Golf Classic

Thanks to the contributions of all of our sponsors, participants and volunteers, we were able to raise over $34,000 before Ken Shinozaki doubled that amount to over $68,000! The 2023 Tonari Gumi Charity Classic raised the largest amount of money we have ever gotten at our tournaments, and it was also the biggest tournament in terms of participants, with 127 players showing up to play in the main tournament.

This year’s tournament was held at Meadow Gardens Golf Club in Pitt Meadows near Maple Ridge. Before the tournament began, each participant was handed a large gift bag with many items provided by our donors. Each team of golfers went through 18 holes on golf carts, generously paid for by Fujiya, one of our sponsors. The main tournament was played in teams using step-aside scramble rules, so everyone could have a chance to contribute to their team. Aside from the main tournament, there was also a putting contest, won by Willy Juan, the only person to get into the hole, and a lost ball contest, won by Tommy Ngo, who managed to guess the exact number of balls lost during the tournament.

After a long day of golf, everyone was gathered into the banquet hall for dinner. Aside from dinner, there was also a silent auction with many prizes, all of which were graciously provided to Tonari Gumi by donors. We also had a 50/50 raffle, a dance performance provided by Appare Yosakoi Vancouver, David Iwaasa’s 75th birthday celebration and door prize draws with almost 20 different winners. Finally, after the delicious dinner and dessert prepared by Meadow Gardens staff, we announced the winners and handed out prizes. Aside from the main tournament winners, we also handed out prizes for the Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive for various holes, divided into 3 categories: Men, Seniors and Ladies.

Congratulations to all the winners!
